I don’t need to inform my readers who LL Cool J exactly is. At least I hope I don't. Not only is he a significant icon within the rap scene but within the culture of Hip Hop as well. He brought his style of lyrical mastery back in the 80s and carried well into the 2000s. Not only was his lyricist style in hip hop known but his fashion too. That Kangol hat and gold chain was his signature fashion accessories. Even today, I sport a Kangol cap to represent the rap genre in its ol’ school style ala LL Cool J.
Nowadays, you can watch him on various television shows and movies and most may know him as the host of Lip Sync Battle. Various celebrities do their best, in turns, to out lip sync the other. It’s a funny television show filled with a good time of letting loose on some of the celebrities’ favorite songs. It’s also great to watch the celebrities bring out their own goofy, fun-loving side.
Some surprising news today about LL’s Twitter post. According to sources, he had announced his retirement from music. When I read this, I was ultimately shocked. But then again, I was thinkin’ that we all have to retire sometime. Plus, he said “music” while being well aware he still does the television show and acts. But still, I was affected and went into reading further. It had seemed to be a post that was either joking or uncertainty. It could also be that he wanted to put the audience in suspense with mystery.
Soon after, he announces he is coming out of retirement and is starting a new album. My feeling of shock suddenly gave me a powerful rush of adrenalin. Who wouldn’t love to hear something new from one of the forefathers of rap! I’m gonna keep a watch out for any news on a possible album and definitely both ears tuning in for any new LL songs.
LL Cool J’s last album was in 2013, entitled Authentic. In 2014, he had announced a new and upcoming album. The album was going to be entitled G.O.A.T. 2 and released in 2015. Could this be the upcoming album but now aimed to be released in 2016? We still have yet to find out.
In January, of this year, he received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I want to leave you with his rap song, off his Authentic album, “Not Leaving You Tonight” featuring Fitz & The Tantrums with Eddie Van Halen:
